4 Way to a Better Game Night

Game Night is a dear tradition providing gamers with competition, brotherhood, and a chance at ultimate glory. The pressure is placed on the host to make the night as successful as possible. A bad Game Night could tarnish a nerd’s reputation for years.

But fear not! The following tips can guarantee that your night will be legendary.

1. Choose the right games (and the right people)

Nothing can kill the legacy of Game Night faster than 5 hours of monotony. Make sure there is variety in the selection of what to play. A video game, a board game, an action game (like charades), and so on. Also try and mix up the time it takes for each one. A round of Monopoly followed by a game of Risk would make even the most dedicated gamers go running (or sleeping).

Game Night requires dedication of not only time, but every creative whim a person has in their possession. You have to be at peace with showing who ever you invite the very depths of your gaming soul. Save your boss and in-laws for the Superbowl, and leave Game Night for your closest buddies.

2. Atmosphere

A good atmosphere will make Game Night something important, and not just some night you’re just sitting around in your PJ’s playing Settlers of Catan with a couple of losers. Put a few streamers up. Place little umbrellas in those drinks. Put music (or the Olympics!) on in the background. If the things around you seem special, the whole night will feel that way too. By following this step, you’ll be sitting around in your PJ’s with a couple of winners.

3. Make your own games

I don’t know about you, but when I saw the characters of FOX’s New Girl play their original “True American Drinking Game”, I immediately wanted to jump in. It was a genius mix of an apartment-wide game board, insane rules only the players could understand, a dash of utter silliness and a pinch of singing. It looked like heaps of fun and belonged only to the characters and the few they chose to share it with. Original games provide an outlet for creativity, the opportunity to make a game with all the components players want, and a badge of honor to those who were there at the time the game was made (not unlike battles of old wars).

Create the game before the night of festivities. Email all of the players in the prior week to come up with the concept and rules. Attach some videos to demonstrate the more movement-based aspects, and don’t forget to name the game! As a matter of fact, you may as well name the whole night as well. By the time Game Night comes, all players will be fully prepared to dominate.

4. Don’t be afraid to bend the rules

It’s not REALLY cheating…but sometimes this step necessary as a last-ditch effort when the game gets stuck in a rut. Throw off your competition by:

-Building alliances

-Making illegal trades

-Remembering the 3 B’s: Bribery Brings Benefits

Congratulations! You are now ready for your ultimate Game Night. But remember, with great Game Night comes great responsibility. It also comes with a lot of laughs…and probably some minor injuries. Be safe!

Fun article! The only thing that I would change is the typo in the title! It’s 4 Ways, because when you say 4 Way you’re just eluding to the beginnings of a TOTALLY different kind of intimate social gathering….
