After Rudely Long Wait, Hannibal is Back
By Haylee Fisher (@haylee_fisher)
Did you watch the season premiere of Hannibal last week? If not, I’m here to catch you up on everything that happened before the second episode comes on tonight!
We all know that Hannibal is one of the bloodiest and oftentimes most disgusting network television shows, but they really pushed the limits with the season premiere. From the nail-biter of an opening sequence to the river dam of bodies, the episode didn’t disappoint.
It opened on a fight between Hannibal and Jack Crawford in Hannibal’s kitchen. I don’t know about you, but I knew something was off. In fact, I thought it was a dream sequence. But when it was revealed to be “present day” and the season would play out in reverse, I couldn’t think of a smarter way to introduce the show back from a torturous hiatus.
While Will has been falsely imprisoned, Hannibal has taken over his job at the FBI and boy does he love screwing with them from the inside. He gives them DNA samples and even has Dr. duMaurier sign a document allowing her to tell them whatever they want to know. No doubt we’ll get more backstory about their history as the season progresses.
Meanwhile, Will is still in prison and not doing well at all. He tries to go to a happy place in his mind – fly fishing – but is only haunted by StagHannibal. He still can’t remember everything that happened. But what finally triggers it is a little help from hypnotism and a lot of help from some questionable looking meat given to him for dinner. The revelation: Hannibal had snaked plastic tubing down his throat and force-fed him Abigail Hobb’s ear. And we as the audience got to see it all. Like I said, disgusting.
Crawford is not impressed and tells him it’s meaningless. “Not to me,” Will says. “I am not the intelligent psychopath you’re looking for.” Chills.
Also chill-worthy is the new way the latest killer treats his victims. He injects them with heroin and other drugs, leaving them for dead, but one victim wakes up and realized he’s been plastered to other grotesquely positioned bodies on the floor of a silo.
Just this episode alone has already set up a great season and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen next.
What did you think of the premiere? Will you be watching episode two tonight?
