Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: 0-8-4

If S.H.I.E.L.D. didn’t grab your attention last week, hopefully it did this week. The action in this week’s episode kept me on the edge of my couch. What was going to happen next? Our team seemed to have no clue how to work together or how to solve a problem together. After all, this was only their second mission. Since this episode felt oddly like a shortened version of the Avengers (the fighting in the lab scene anyone?), I’d like to talk a little bit about the characters.

The team gets called in for an 0-8-4, which is code for: no one knows what it is. After discovering that is it made out of Tesseract type material, the team takes it into their possession. Naturally, they are not the only ones who want it. Some pretty cool battles ensue and the team is able to come together and use each of their talents to resolve the problem. This will probably be a recurring theme and it can provide some interesting twists being that we still don’t know much about the character’s back stories.

Skye is still in a test period with the team. She is currently struggling to find out what she specializes in. Skye seems to think that she is pretty normal compared to everyone else that surrounds her. However, what makes her different is that she can think for herself. She hasn’t seen what the other’s have. She is naive when it comes to these encounters on a personal level. But we also realize that Skye is a huge risk. She is still a part of Rising Tide, which we also don’t know much about.

Agent May isn’t the biggest fan of battle. However, combat is built in her DNA. She can’t say no to a good fight. We learn that she was part of/ was something called The Calvary. We can only assume that it was something related to combat in the field. She is extremely good at that stuff. We also, learn that she doesn’t like to talk about it. Why, Agent May? Please tell us what happened!

Ward is the Alpha male. This is something we always knew, but are proved time and time again. This week, he actually admits that he doesn’t really know how to work with other people. He was trained as a specialist. He goes it alone. Skye helps him discover that if he is willing to let them, the team can help him solve problems. It’s not something he’s used to but that’s something he’ll just have to get over.

Coulson has a heart of gold. Avengers fans knew that from the beginning. He believes the good in everyone until he is proven wrong. This week we learn that he was quite the charmer in his younger days. However, he is still the same old Coulson. Still a good heart, a little wiser, and extremely good at sensing a good team when he sees one.

Personally, I love how the show ties in pieces from The Avengers series. We hear about THOR’s hammer. We are still seeing familiar 0-8-4’s such as the one in this episode which had qualities of the Tesseract. Not to mention all of the awesome cameos, such as Nick Fury’s appearance at the end of this week’s episode. They could have gone a completely different root with just Coulson forming a team, but its connection to the series makes it more relatable to its viewers.

I also really enjoy how real the show is. I mean after a crazy day of getting shot at, who doesn’t want to relax with a beer?

Is anyone else loving this series? Which character is your favorite this far?

Coulson is such a sweetie and I really want to know what the deal is with his resurrection. What is it that he can’t find out about himself. But of course I love May. She’s a cool chick that kicks some ass. My kids and I are really enjoying the series.

My favourite has to be a toss up between Fitz and Simmons, I just love the relationship between those two. I’ve been watching with my little brother and dad, they’re not so impressed at the minute and I’m loathe to admit that Ward and Skye are kind of a turn off for me…
