Minor plot spoilers ahead
Avengers fans can breathe easier tonight now that we’ve been introduced to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. All the hype has lead to an awesome pilot episode.
This series lets us dive into S.H.I.E.L.D’s Level 7. A new level headed by Agent Phil Coulson, Level 7 is built throughout the pilot episode as we glimpse 4 agents whose backgrounds and talents make them a unique asset to the new team. The team is designed to help investigate the strange and unknown and to protect the ordinary from the extraordinary. We even get a taste of this during the opening scene when we are shown the Agent’s first target: a young man who scales a building and seems to have super strength when he saves a woman from a burning building.
Coulson’s team consists of Agent Ward, a specialist trained in combat and espionage. He’s not exactly a people person, but he would do just about anything for S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Melinda May, the pilot who clearly has a history with S.H.I.E.L.D. She isn’t very happy with her new assignment but she does get to drive a pretty killer bus. Agents Fitz and Simmons, and Engineer and Bio Chemist who are extremely intelligent and creative. When we are introduced to their characters they seem to clash a bit. Ward is really serious, May doesn’t take anything from anyone, and Fitz/Simmons are more childish like.
Their first mission is to find a group called Rising Tide who has hacked into S.H.I.E.L.D’s database and leaking classified information. Rising Tide ends up being a character we only know as Skye. Skye is sassy and an expert when it comes to hacking and she currently lives in a van. She is a super being fan girl who’s history is a complete mystery to S.H.I.E.L.D. In Coulson’s words, “She’s a huge asset.”
Skye tells the team about Centipede. Basically, Gamma rays, alien matter, and the super soldier sryum all rolled into one. It is attached to their first target’s forearm and we learn that the matters combined may cause the young man to explode. Once we gather all this information and get to the super climatic chase scene, we get to see something awesome. Just like in the Avenger’s we witness a group of people coming together not necessarily because they want to, but because they need to. The team is able to save the young man’s life, at least that is what we can assume.
This show does a great job of keeping matters serious and adding a touch of that humor that only Clark Gregg could pull off as Agent Coulson. I think that we are going to see
a lot of interesting relationships form over the course of the series. Skye and Agent Ward, for example, seemed to have a small connection that we could see develop into a romance if Agent Ward is willing to let his guard down. We are also going to see a lot of interesting relationships develop in terms of S.H.I.E.L.D. We don’t know much about Skye and Coulson mentions that Agent Ward has an interesting history. I am curious to see what happens.
If you, like me, were hoping to get an answer to how Phil Coulson is still with us than you are out of luck. All we know is that he was sent to Tahiti. He seems refreshed; even though the doctor says that he should probably get a little more rest. Agent Hill states that Coulson can never know what really happened. I am extremely intrigued but it would awesome if he was a Life Model Decoy. Knowing Marvel, there is a good chance that Tahiti is actually something along the lines of T.A.H.I.T.I, but we’ll have to wait and see.
With all the development left with their characters and all the directions the plot could go, I am confident in saying that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will hit it big. At 11:30pm EST #agentsofSHIELD was trending #4 on Twitter. Everyone seems to have been impressed and I am sure that there are more great things to come. I mean, come on, Lola can fly!
What are your thoughts about the show so far? Were you blown away by the pilot?
