Aliens!!!

If 2008-2012 were the years of Stephenie Meyer’s incredibly popular Twilight vampire series, then 2013 is shaping up to be the year of the aliens; zombies being a close-second with The Walking Dead, Evil Dead, Warm Bodies, and highly-celebrated Supernatural. Promoting the undead and the extraterrestrial as the newest and most promising IT groups has extended past the aforementioned to Meyer’s latest book-turned-film and the exciting new Syfy show, Defiance, blazing its own epic trail with its own cooperative sidekick, a video game based on the series!

Though aliens never truly went away as a point of fascination, it seems like those pesky extraterrestrials have been making a steady comeback with releases like District 9, Super 8, Prometheus, Men in Black III, and more. As far back as 1999 and perhaps longer, aliens have been a riveting piece of the eternally mysterious possibilities of the world we live in as well as a constant fixture on our television screens, i.e. the WB and then UPN’s doomed-yet-intriguing alien series Roswell, based on the infamous alien reports from Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. And who could forget the still relevant and extremely popular Fox series, The X-Files, that spanned nine seasons and two well-received films, The X-Files and The X-Files: I Want To Believe as recent as 2008?

In 2013, Stephenie Meyer’s second series, The Host, tackles alien-human relationship from another perspective. Melanie Stryder has a bit of a double-identity crisis going on as she’s a human girl also inhabited by a parasitic alien called Wanderer (nicknamed Wanda). Jared Howe falls in love with Melanie, but Ian O’Shea loves Wanda, which makes for quite the complicated love story. If the amount of fanfare already is enough to indicate, it looks like Ms. Meyer’s got another hit on her hands.

Syfy’s Defiance looks like it’s shaping up to be something fantastic! In addition to a promising and captivating television show (airing Monday nights this month), it is also spawning a video game of the same name to assist what is already going on in the show. If commercials and the video game are any sign of what’s to come, it looks like it’s going to be something talked about at water coolers and high school lockers all around the country for a long time coming.

Both of these alluring projects show just hints of the potential greatness of the approaching alien concepts and I, for one, can’t wait!
