Ben Affleck will soon be pitted against Henry Cavill onscreen. That’s because he has been chosen to play Batman in the Man of Steel sequel, teased at Comic-Con as Superman vs. Batman. The film is set to go into production in 2014, with Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne, and Diane Lane all reprising their roles.
Following the news of his casting, the Internet was up in arms, declaring him wrong for the part and even starting petitions to have him removed from the project. But why so much outrage? Yes, he has starred in duds like Gigli and Pearl Harbor, and there’s also the fact that previous his turn as a superhero in Daredevil was not very well-received, but those critical of the news need to remember the man is an Oscar winner a few times over. Through Good Will Hunting and Argo, it can’t be denied: the man has talent.
You know who else is supporting him? Joss Whedon. If the God of the Geeks is on board, why can’t the public be as well?
All of this negativity is reminiscent of when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker in 2006, and we all know how that turned out. Maybe Affleck will prove his detractors wrong and become a new Batman for a new age.
