Comic Book Men: The Clash at the Stash
by Ashley Binion
After months of hiatus, the boys are back with more wacky adventures from Kevin Smith’s comic book store, The Secret Stash.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
I was somewhat disappointed with the episode. They didn’t acquire or sell any special comic books. Instead, they dealt mostly with novelty items, and a good amount of the episode focused on a former UFC fighter. Usually, the items that intrigue me most are those that are extremely rare, but this episode didn’t feature any.
The first seller to enter The Stash came bearing a statue of Juggernaut, arguably the best item in the episode. Of course, Juggernaut is the step-brother of Professor X and first appeared in X-Men #12. Also, he briefly appeared in the third X-Men movie, X-Men: The Last Stand. After some haggling, he agreed to sell his statue for $274.
Former UFC fighter Nate Quarry came to inquire about the shop carrying his comic Zombie Cage Fighter, based loosely on his life as a fighter; but he incorporated the latest pop culture craze: zombies. Walt, the store manager, convinced Nate to show them a real fight in order to stock the book.
Another man entered the store looking to sell his novelty Superman and Wonder Woman Underoos. They were sold by Fruit of the Loom in 1978 and featured superheroes such as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America. Underoos weren’t exclusively superheroes designs. They also produced designs inspired by Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Transformers.
The boys bought the pair of Superman and Wonder Woman Underoos for $75. Ming and Walt tried them on to see if they could fit in them. Poor Ming didn’t understand that Underoos were meant to go under the clothes, so he walked into the store with them on the outside and was teased by his fellow employees.
The next man to walk in was looking to buy Green Lantern Vol. 2 #76. It was the first issue that co-starred Green Arrow with Green Lantern. Walt wanted to sell it for $425, but eventually came down to $350. However, the buyer couldn’t do it, and ended up buying the trade paperback for $30. It was disappointing to watch the negotiation and the man just give up to buy the cheaper trade paperback.
At the end of the episode, Nate held up his end of the bargain and showed the guys a fight. Kevin and friend Jason Mewes, who portrayed Jay in Clerks, showed up to watch the fight. The two fighters came out dressed in Jay and Silent Bob costumes. Jay ended up winning the fight, not without some hilarious commentary from the group of guys.
Usually, Kevin is only in the podcast portion of the episode so it was fun to see him outside of the podcast room.
