Five Star Wars Characters Who Need Their Own Prequels

After first announcing JJ Abrams will be directing the new Star Wars sequels, news broke from Disney that some characters will be getting their own standalone prequel movies. It has been reported Han Solo and Boba Fett are the first two on the list. While those are obviously amazing characters who are huge fan favorites, I can’t help but think of other characters that deserve their own backstories.

It is important to note I’ve been a Star Wars fan since I was eight years old and my brother showed me A New Hope for the first time. Despite that love, I will admit I’ve never read any of the book series, seen the Clone Wars TV show, or played any of the video games. Whether that makes me a purist or uninformed in the fandom’s eyes, I don’t know, but I wanted to be upfront about it and note that because of that, this is in no way a comprehensive list.

Do you have a favorite character I may have missed?

yodaYoda

This one is a little selfish on my part. Yoda has always been one of my favorite characters, so I’ve always wanted to know more about him. Yes, Episodes I-III gave us a little information about him and he got to show off his light saber skills, but what led him to that point? How did he become such a wise Jedi master and expert fighter?  I’d love to learn more about his planet, his history, and his training. But only if the movies were made with puppet Yoda, none of that CGI Yoda crap.

darthmaulDarth Maul

I’ve always been impressed with Darth Maul’s use of a double-bladed light saber, even if I was less than impressed by the movie he was in. All we know about the character is that he was trained by Palpatine and was sent to do his bidding. But wouldn’t you like to learn more about how he became Palpatine’s personal assassin? How he came to be so accomplished with his rare weapon? What his facial markings mean? These questions and more could be answered in what would be guaranteed to be a highly entertaining movie.

leiaPrincess Leia

Okay, technically we know her background, but what happened in the years between when the Organas adopted her and when A New Hope begins? I’d love to learn about her life growing up on Alderaan. We already know Leia is feisty and strong-willed, but what circumstances led her to develop those characteristics? One of our first introductions to her features her accurate use of a blaster – was that due to her lineage or from an event in childhood? I don’t know, but I’d love to find out!

landoLando Calrissian

Lando has always been a fan favorite character, so his movie would be bound to succeed. If he were to be the subject of a prequel, it would be smart to focus on his rise to leadership and how he and Han became friends. He’s clearly loyal to his friends and has a rogue streak to him – so those would be obvious reasons for his and Han’s friendship – but he is clearly respected by the Cloud City citizens. Who wouldn’t want to learn more about him?

roguesquadronThe Rogue Squadron

Yes, I know the Rogue Squadron is made of many men. But how cool would a movie (or movies!) be that explains how they all became part of the team? I think it would be interesting to find out what led each man to become a pilot and join the squadron and the Rebellion. Can’t you see the training montages now?

most of these stories can be found in the Expanded Universe books. Out of Haylee’s list I think Rogue Squadron would make for a really good Syfy Channel series. The books on this crew are some of my favorite stories. I think a TV show with stylings some where between Battlestar and Stargate would work out well.

A puppet yoda? No, get Andy Serkis to do motion capture and have a martial rts expert fill in for the fighting. Or perhaps Serkis could be trained. Puppets are soooo stupid looking. A movie with a puppet Yoda would bomb because people, particularly children, would expect at least the same level of acrobatics as episode II and IIi

Pretty sure Lando will be in the Han movie, but I would watch Lando movie. I could always see a Starkiller movie, see what Obi Wan was up to while he waited for Luke to grow up. A Mara Jade film would be awesome.

I want to see an Aayla Secura film.

I always argued that they should use puppet Yoda over CGI until I saw Phantom Menace. That puppet Yoda was so creepy!
