The Gamers Digest is designed to inform you Nerds with all the latest happenings in the world of video games. After missing last week due to Nerd HQ, we are back to report the indie capabilities of the Xbox One, Nintendo nearly missing out on a huge opportunity and an expensive buyout from Activision Blizzard.

Xbox One Will Self Publish Indie Games to a Degree

Word got out that every Xbox One console would be able to publish games directly to Xbox Live. This means that anybody will be able to not only publish their own games, but create them as well, making the Xbox One an affordable developer kit for game designers. All games uploaded will strictly remain in the ‘Indies’ section of Xbox Live, but the idea is designed to help indie developers get their product out quicker and more efficiently. Microsoft’s VP of Xbox Marc Whitten said in a press release, “Our vision is that every person can be a creator. That every Xbox One can be used for development.”

Super Smash Bros. Melee Brings Record Audience to Evo 2013

Evolution Championship Series, or Evo, is an annual tournament featuring the best players in the fighting game community. Popular franchises such as Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, Tekken, King of Fighters  and more are all showcased in a weekend long tournament. During Evo 2013, Nintendo tried to step in and completely banish any mention of the newest game in the lineup, Super Smash Bros. Melee. Community members and fans raised over $94,000 (with all proceeds going towards cancer research) just to get SSBM into the tournament and nearly saw every dollar wasted just for Nintendo to pull the plug. Luckily, Nintendo changed their mind and allowed the game to be played and the live stream set records with over one hundred thousand viewers logged in.

PlayStation 4 Will Record Up to Fifteen Minutes of Gameplay

One of the most fascinating features to be announced on the PlayStation 4 was the ability to record your game footage and share it with friends. Some PlayStation 3 games have this feature built in, granted it was limited and not the most used concept, but it was a start. Reports are circulating that claim the PS4 will record the past fifteen minutes of your game footage for easy sharing and uploading. The footage can be shared to Ustream in the background of your game and will not interrupt your gaming experience. Apparently, the PS4 has a “dedicated hardware encoder” that allows this feature to be implemented, and will obviously work directly with the Dualshock 4 ‘Share’ button.

Activision Blizzard Reaches Deal to Separate from Vivendi

Activision Blizzard is currently finalizing a deal worth eight billion dollars to separate from Vivendi. Only the second-largest gaming company by revenue after Nintendo, Activision Blizzard will buy back their shares from Vivendi in order to go independent. Whenever game companies ‘split’ in this fashion, it’s generally to have more control in your product and in turn, more profit. Then again, the last major property from Activision Blizzard was Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and that only made five hundred million dollars in its first day. One day, five hundred million dollars. I sound like Dr. Evil writing this.

Amazing High Definition Rendering of Chrono Trigger

Somebody took the intro sequence to Chrono Trigger and remastered every frame for high-definition. The final result is outstanding and only makes me want to start a new Chrono Trigger  file for the seventeenth time. Big props go to YouTube user ‘rickonami’ for putting this together, as I am floored by the quality of this.

That’s all the gaming news we have for today. So, Nerds, will you be using the self-publishing feature on the Xbox One? How about the streaming capabilities of the PlayStation 4? Were you one of the record setting viewers watching Evo?
