Hand-on With PS4
By Ricky Strong
The next generation of gaming is almost here nerds, and I have went hands on with the PS4. Lucky gamers that live in select towns can also visit participating Sony stores to demo the PS4 too! The games available for players to demo include Knack, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Pinball Arcade, FIFA 14, Super Motherload, and Contrast. The star of the trial of the PS4 is the DualShock 4, due to the fact you cannot access the home screen and the games are not final builds.
At first glance, the DualShock 4 has much larger handle grips. The larger size makes the DualShock 4 feel much more ergonomic, and I have small hands. The DualShock 4 is very light despite the added size. The back is textured, so you do not have to worry about the controller sliding in your hand like the DualShock 3. The texture also makes the DualShock 4 very comfortable to hold.
The new analog sticks are much improved over the DualShock 3. The new lip on the stick adds a lot of grip and is comfortable for your thumbs. One of the biggest additions for the DualShock 4 is the R2 and L2 triggers. The triggers extend out away from the controller and have an indention for your finger. The triggers feel more natural due to the new shape. The motion of the triggers are smooth from the beginning of the press to finish, and seem to be a little stiffer then the DualShock 3.
Some of the features that were unavailable to use are the touch pad, share button, and speaker. I did click the touch pad in a few times and it was rigid but very responsive. When you quit a demo, it sends you back to a screen showcasing the demos available on the system, not the revamped home screen.
Developers controller comments (apr 2013)
As for the game demos, they are all really fun. Octodad is crazy and reminds me of QWOP. Knack looks to be a great game for anyone in the family. I played Knack on hard and it was definitely a challenge. FIFA 14 is more polished and expands on the great game-play of the PS3/Xbox 360 versions with more animations. Contrast looked great on the PS4 also. I did not play or see game-play of Super Motherload or Pinball Arcade.
November 15th cannot come soon enough after getting my hands on the PS4. The DualShock 4 is a huge improvement over the DualShock 3 and I definitely will be buying Knack. Check out the pictures of the DualShock 4 or head out to your local Sony store to see it in action for yourself.
