Kickstarting Mars

Veronica  Mars fans have  reason to celebrate! In less than a day, over two million dollars  were raised to fund a movie based on the former CW show that ran from  2004 to 2007.

The Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter campaign was launched yesterday with  a video featuring stars Kristen Bell, Ryan Hansen, Jason Dohring, Enrico  Colantoni, and show creator Rob Thomas. Though the goal was reached,  there’s still twenty-nine days left for supporters to donate and some  sweet incentives are being offered to backers. A $10 donation gets you  a PDF of the script and production updates, and a $10,000 donation got  one lucky person a speaking role in the film. Falling in between that  grand scale were associate producer credits, movie posters, autographs,  digital and DVD copies of the movie, film premiere tickets, t-shirts,  and the list goes on. The film is set to begin filming this summer.

The passion of diehard fans  combined with the cast and crew’s labor-of-love dedication has worked  wonders in the past with Firefly, Chuck, Roswell, and more. The success of the Veronica Mars movie campaign is a true testament  to how the industry could further evolve. If networks won’t back it,  who says the fans won’t?

So…Chuck movie,  anyone?

Whilst I hope the studios embrace new ways to determine how much demand there is for more of a television show or whether there is an audience for a film or not given how clueless they can appear to be on the subject at times, I hope there’s not a move towards asking fans to fund part of the projects – at least not unless it results in cheaper cinema tickets because the audience is already funding films through their cinema tickets, albeit after the event.

Still incredibly excited at the prospect of a Veronica Mars film, though.

I would msot definitely fund this project if they shipped the rewards outside the US. Apparently the movie is US only

There is a shift in the entertainment industry that has been coming for a while now and this is the first REAL indication that fans are ready.
TV ratings (and more precisely, the way the studios use them) have been WRONG for a long time. How do you measure the value of a fan? I’ve watched many of my favorite TV shows end in their prime because ratings were “low”? So, not that many eyeballs on a show means that it has no value????
Now, fans can put their money into a show directly and indicate what the real value is! What would be even better is if I (as a fan) could truly invest in a show and get a return on my investment if it performed well.
Put Chuck, Firefly, Stargate, BSG Blood & Chrome and anything else that has a following up on a site for investors and let the fans decide! I’ll put money in all of those.

I would totally support a Chuck movie! Totally loved the series and miss it a lot. Already threw in a couple bucks for the Veronica Mars movie to support it and to hopefully encourage other projects like it in the future. ie. Chuck 🙂

We stumbled on Chuck by accident, and I have to say that the whole family (ages ranging from 10 to 51!) has watched and been riveted to the TV. We loved all the characters, and there wasn’t an episode that went by where I didn’t laugh out loud. We were really really disappointed when the series came to an end, particularly when there are so many incredibly bad series out there that seem to run and run, and here was an absolute gem of a series which ended too soon in our view. Would I donate for another series or movie, ABSOLUTELY YES, I would. Fan for life.
