Once Upon a Time: The Outsider
by Justin Jasso (@jjasso007)
When we left off last week, the whole town believed Regina had killed Archie Hopper, but in reality, Archie was tied up on Hook’s ship. This week the focus was on Belle, something long overdue.
In Fairy Tale Land past, Belle is helping to search for a beast which has a head covered in fire, the Yaogui, which has been killing people and terrorizing villages. A group of men who have no respect get the location from her and promptly kick her out of the search party. Unfortunately for them, Belle gave them the wrong location. She then finds the creature, which is shot with an arrow from a different direction by Mulan, and escapes. Mulan, upset over losing her target she’s been hunting for months, scolds Belle. But Belle, with the help of her books, knows where it will be, which saves Mulan some time.
They are able to track the Yaogui down but Mulan is injured, so Belle goes to fight it alone. She is able to lure the creature into a trap where she slices a pipeline dousing the creature with water, putting out its flames. Once it is dazed and laying on the ground, Belle walks over to kill it but notice that is writing something in the ground with its nails in a language Belle can translate. It says “Help me.” Belle then sprinkles it with fairy dust that Dreamy gave her earlier and the beast turns into Prince Phillip. He goes back with Belle to Mulan where he helps care for her wound, and they part ways only for Belle to meet Regina and be taken to a prison.
In present-day Storybrooke, Mr. Gold has been working on a new potion that will allow him to leave Storybrooke with his memory intact, and he finds a little guinea pig to test it out on, Mr. Smee. The potion is successful and Gold now has a way to go find his son. However, while Gold is away, Belle is attacked by Hook at the library. She’s able to escape and lock herself in an elevator where she calls Gold who comes to her rescue. However, Hook is nowhere to be found. Later, Gold notices something very important to him is missing, Baelfire’s shawl!
Gold ends up telling Belle why there is hatred between himself and Hook but doesn’t mention that he killed his own wife. Gold is determined to get even with Hook and leaves Belle. However, Belle, being the resourceful woman she is, uses her books to seek out Hook. She goes to the port and finds birds landing on top of an invisible mast. She then deduces the boat is there and finds her way aboard, in turn finding Archie Hopper and setting him free.
When Belle goes to leave, Hook shows up. She tries to escape but is cornered by Hook. Luckily Gold shows up just in time. Hook asks if he’s going to use his magic to beat him, in which Gold responds by beating him with his cane. After beating Hook like he stole something (which he did), Belle talks Gold out of killing Hook and they both leave. They go to the border of the town where Gold uses the potion on Baelfire’s shawl, says his goodbye to Belle and walks across the line. Luckily he’s aright, turns to Belle, who is then shot with a gun by Hook, forcing her across the line where she loses her memory. Gold, in absolute fury, readies a ball of fire to throw at Hook when a car comes across the border, plowing into Hook and crashing.
This was another one of those episodes that felt like a filler piece. While it was nice to get more backstory on Belle, plus learn a little about Prince Phillip (not that he’s in the show really), this was more a setup for what’s to come next. Something I have to question about Hook is his ability as a fighter. He was beaten by Emma and Belle as well as a gimpy Mr. Gold. For being a feared pirate, he sure loses a lot of fights to inexperienced hand-to-hand fighters. Also, where was Cora during this whole episode? Belle is just able to easily find the ship, free Hopper, and almost leave freely without Cora knowing? Maybe it’s just part of her master plan? Who knows? And finally, this is the second time in as many seasons that a random person comes to the town of Storybrooke. Pinocchio did it last season and now a new person is here. What does this mean for the future? We’ll have to find out!
