Pathfinder Online Reaches Kickstarter Goal

Kickstarter has become the venture capitalist for the indie crowds. If you’ve got a good idea for just about anything, chances are you can find enough backers to support it. If it’s good enough that is. And if there’s enough time. Even when the goal is $1 million, like that of Pathfinder Online from Paizo Publishing. All the stars have aligned for Goblinworks Inc., as the project has exceeded its funding goal.

Goblinworks CEO Ryan Dancey says, “We are humbled by your support and can’t wait to bring Pathfinder Online to life. Thank you, Crowd-Forgers! Time for us to get to work.”

For the unawares, Pathfinder is a fantasy RPG first published in 2009 by Paizo Publishing. That’s all good and well, but here’s the kicker: the game extends and modified the Revised 3rd Edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Pathfinder Online is a hybrid sandbox/theme park-style massively multiplayer, online roleplaying game (MMORPG) where characters explore, develop, find adventure and dominate a

wilderness frontier in a land of sword and sorcery. With the game successfully funded, Goblinworks now moves forward with an accelerated development schedule, and will have additional updates when the Kickstarter completes.

The game builds on more than ten years of system development, accompanied by the largest open playtest in the history of tabletop gaming. All gamers really need to play is the Pathfinder RPG Core Rulebook to play, but Paizo Publishing produces a wide range of books and accessories to enhance your Pathfinder experience, from hardcover rules compendiums to complete campaigns to packets of beautiful full-color maps.

Why the success of the Kickstarter? Besides the fact that the work is steeped in D&D lore, the pledge rewards were pretty epic. Everything ranging from early access to the Beta, to digital copies of the game to PDFs of the rules for tabletop gaming were present, but those were just the tip of the iceberg. For instance, if you managed $5,000 in donations, you were assured a tavern in-game that will even include a backer-designed NPC regular at the tavern. Of course, only six of the ten spots were filled at that donation range, so you still had a chance!

Whether or not you’re keen on the Kickstarter for the MMO or tabletop aspect, the fact remains that the D&D name continues to bear some weight among fans. 8,615 backers supported the project, al of whom will populate the world of the impending MMO, reveling in their newfound rewards. Pathfinder Online is something that clearly has expectations attached to it and—thanks to the support—is slated to be fast-tracked into production.

Bigger picture? Previously unexpected projects are finding that there are people out there who want them. If a game like Pathfinder Online can generate over $1 million in support, gamers can expect even more projects like it to make waves (and money) to go into production. It’s a heady time to be a gamer; if you’re not really feeling any of the AAA titles, chances are there’s a Kickstarter with something less mainstream but just as good.
