Episode 58: The Finale
Zach, David, Tyler, and Razzle look back at their favorite Picking Favorites moments as they begin their new Nerd Machine journey.

From All of Us:
It’s been really fun doing Picking Favorites on the Wolfpop Network. We truly appreciate the opportunity given to us by the guys there, especially Paul Scheer, Adam, Matt, and Andrew. We are so appreciative to the fans that have listened to every episode, who commented, who called in, and who supported the show by sharing with others. A special thanks to Shannon Fox who has been doing an amazing recap of the show. You are a rockstar.

We are sad to see this show come to an end, but know that this is not the end of our podcast. We are developing a new show, that will include video by the way, that we will release on our own in the coming months. There will a new format for the show, as well as new guests and features.

Very positive things happening this year for the Nerd Machine and we are excited for all of you to be a part of it. Keep it safe and keep it nerdy.

Now if we can only find someone to write a new theme song. Hmmmmmmm.

Already posted this on Twitter, but I found the molestation joke to be extremely disappointing. Otherwise, it was a good episode. It’d be cool to see some guests on the program in the future, maybe some women so it’s not just a boys club and examines nerd culture from another perspective too. Really excited that Retta will be on the show. Best of luck!

  2. Matthew RothblattNovember 5th, 2014 at 8:38 am

Great show guys! Keep it going! If you ever want to talk about/interview Indie/Creator Owned Comic Book dudes, hit us up! We’d be happy to discuss our flagship comic book series, Spiralmind, which AICN called – “…unlike any comic I’ve read before…and a hell of a lot of fun to read…. definitely a comic book reading experience you won’t forget”. We can also talk about how we were able to get a version of our main character into next year’s SyFy Channel, sure-to-be mega smash LAVALANTULA, directed by Saturn Award winner Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider) and staring Steve Guttenberg. P.S. One of the greatest cartoons I remember growing up was Dungeons and Dragons (CBS 1983-1985) – think Scooby Doo meets Thundercats – you younger dudes will have to google/youtube it! Greatest Time Travel Movie – Time Bandits! – Matt, Phi3 COMICS

  3. Ernie DavisNovember 5th, 2014 at 6:50 pm

Great idea, and I enjoyed the podcast, but if you’ll consider some constructive criticism, with 4 people, only one of whose voice I am familiar with, there was a lot of crosstalk that lost me. I think a rotating moderator who calls out for answers by name might be in order, especially if you plan on 4 people and a guest for each podcast.

Looking forward to the next one.

  4. Emma GibsonNovember 12th, 2014 at 3:49 pm

Well to be honest, I’m really enjoying the show! Nice to listen to guys being themselves talking about whatever they want to talk about! Keeps me going in the morning while I’m putting my slap on ready for work! You guys crack me up, please continue!

  5. Kayla smithNovember 12th, 2014 at 9:37 pm

You guys keep me laughing. Makes me miss the chuck days. Adam Baldwin, you don’t like Chicago pizza?

  6. Tammy AdamsNovember 13th, 2014 at 4:39 am

Loved Chuck with Zach so when I saw Zach had this podcast I had to check it out. Glad I did. You guys are so funny. Can’t wait to hear what you have to say next.

  7. KimNovember 13th, 2014 at 7:18 am

I would love to watch ya’ll make this. I know the point is to listen. But they sound so awesome I would love to watch one.

  8. Andrea SchneebergerNovember 13th, 2014 at 7:32 am

Awesome podcast, love it very much.
You guys sometimes talk all at the same time which is a bit confusing and you can not understand really what you are saying at these points, but besides of that it is truly awesome. Looking forward for more 🙂

  9. Ashley ToaddyNovember 14th, 2014 at 5:19 pm

I love the concept of this show! The first show had me hooked. Really loved that you had Adam Baldwin (MINI CHUCK REUNION!!) My husband will be happy so happy to hear that his secret shame is Pitch Perfect. Haha. Looking forward to listening more!

  10. D. W.November 15th, 2014 at 10:53 am

I haven’t listened to the second one yet, but after listening to the first, I was a bit disappointed.

The conversation was wildly entertaining, and I loved that it’s just some nerdy guys talking about nerdy things with each other. But I think it would be better if you cleaned it up a bit. Toned down the language some. Made the joking a bit more appropriate (from a fairly standard cultural view of what’s ‘appropriate’). It wasn’t as much that it really bothered me, but it surprised me with the discussion being so oriented to fairly innocent pop-culture. And with the language and inappropriateness, there are very few people (in my context) that I would feel comfortable suggesting it to. Which surprised and disappointed me.

Traditionally, I’ve been able to recommend anything with Zachary Levi to anyone without even thinking about it. And guarantee they would enjoy it. But not so much with the language and certain jokes made in this.

But aside from that, it is a lot of fun. (Though it is sometimes hard to tell who is talking when people interject, so you should film it so I can watch who is interjecting.)

  11. PJNovember 19th, 2014 at 9:45 am

people need to quit whining about language. nobody is forcing you to listen.

  12. J.M.November 23rd, 2014 at 2:57 am

    Podcast is a great idea.

    Random thoughts:
    – Like others have already mentioned, for most people only Zac has a recognizable voice so all the talking over each other can get pretty tiresome.

    – So many guys, where are the women? (I see that Aisha is coming so that’s great, but would be nice to have some regulars as well)

    – Less crudeness, more smart jokes. 😛

I don’t want to dwell on the decision to have Adam Baldwin guesting. I’m sure you got enough criticism for it… but it wasn’t the wisest of decisions considering how he’s been behaving lately.

Some guests I’d love to see (I don’t know how realistic some of these suggestions are, but Zac has some kind of a connection to most of them, right? 🙂 ->
Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, Yvette Nicole Brown, Katee Sackhoff, Wil Wheaton, Clark Gregg, Felicia Day etc etc…

  13. HeraNovember 26th, 2014 at 2:16 pm

I listen to your show every time! I am here in the Philippines, of course what draw me in is Zac himself since I’ve been a long time fan of his show Chuck and his career in general. Since I am not from the US I’m not that familiar with Podcasts in general, but whatever they’re suppose to be I’m grateful Nerd Machine has one!

Still rooting for Chuck Movie though!

Keep up the good work guys! Just so you know I’m the sixth person listening to you!

  14. SharlzGNovember 27th, 2014 at 4:24 pm

I’m finding this really entertaining I like that it feels like having a casual chat with your mates (similar to Nerdist podcast which I enjoy for the same reason) but with the added quirk of a weekly theme. I do agree that some of the content/language makes it hard for me to recommend this to some people in my group who I think would enjoy the topics/humour, but I just mentally filter those moments and enjoy the rest of the show. Like some others, I also sometimes have trouble differentiating the voices but I think this will improve once I get used to everyone’s tone/accent. Looking forward to see (well, officially “hear”) what guests/topics the future brings.

I was never really into the whole podcast scene until I listened to Picking Favorites. I love you guys! Just one thing bothers me. I can’t honestly recommend your show to my family or friends because, even though I know people who would find this show as entertaining as I do, they wouldn’t listen past the first use of profanity. Please try to keep it clean guys. Other than that keep up the good work!

I like the podcast, i like the concept, it’s fairly well executed (i know its a new podcast, it takes time to achieve flow, and the Wolfpop Network is part of the problem). The crew has a good rapport which is good but is also a negative. Beyond that, the few criticisms i have:
–Basically this podcast is the worst use of a guest of any podcast I’ve ever heard. Sometimes the guest is maybe heard for maybe 5 minutes out of the approximate hour of the show (extremely minimal interaction in the Tricia Helfer episode, and not her fault). Perhaps 1 less host would give more time with guest and give everyone time to have a bit of a conversations which leads to….
–The talking over each other is really bad and the supreme leader in that category is…..
–Why the F is Razzle on this. He yammers over everybody like I’ve never heard before. Interruptive useless ramblings and “facts”, overly verbose nonsense stories , and for someone who’s supposed to be a comedian, jokes landing are 0 for the show (I believe Zac did give him a mercy chuckle in one of the episodes).
The last criticism is the “podcast network’s” (Wolfpop) problem and not completely the show’s fault, but the interrupting of the show and any flow it had to do a commercial it terrible. I personally go out of my way to not support a sponsor if they have the podcast interrupt their show to do the advertisement. I’ve also stopped listening to podcasts that do this and this is nearing that point (you’re a “new media” broadcast with a chance to change things for the better but are doing the same things that are basically killing live broadcasting (Terrestrial radio and live TV). I’m just glad that the biggest podcasts i listen to (Joe Rogan, Marc Maron, Nerdist) all do the same style of advertising, do it in the beginning and don’t interrupt the flow of your show for that crap.
Good luck with the show and hope it continues to improve.

JackJeebs above voiced some of my main annoyances with the show.

You guys definitely have too many regulars. Sometimes less is more. I want to hear more from the guest of the week! And stop talking over each other, please! Several commentators have brought this up, so I hope it’s something you try to improve on. (Also, not a big fan of Razzle, sorry)

That said, it’s good that TNM has a podcast. I suspect initially most listeners tune in for Zac (and the guest), but that doesn’t have to be the only reason. I always felt TNM should branch into doing more stuff like Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry and podcast is a good first step. When people become more aware of you it’ll surely help getting sponsors and partners for NerdHQ and for whatever smaller projects you decide to do.

Look, the team are new to pod-casting and as such you would expect their to be a little bit of talking over each other. I can’t say that I am terribly surprised by this. Think about it, if you and your fellow nerds are talking about your favorite things you tend to get a bit carried away. I don’t think that anyone is intentionally ignoring or talking over the guest. They all have their own personalities and some are quieter than others. Jason Ritter was quiet but Aiesha was loud. I love the show and will continue to support them. It can only get better and better.

    Hey guys
Love your podcast! I’m about the same age as all of you and I’m definitely connecting with all of the favorites you guys pick!
I’m currently listening to Episode 13 and I had a similar story to Razzle on the Blue Streak at Cedar Point. I too grew up in Michigan and we’d take a day trip every summer to Cedar Point. When I was 4 years old, well before they had the height regulations like they do today, my dad took me on the Blue Streak. The lap bar could only hit my dad’s lap and not my own. All of the people on the ride were raising their hands as we were going down the first hill (which is the steepest on that ride), so not knowing any better, I too raised my hands. My dad was completely unaware and as we were going down, he looked over at me as I was starting to ride up out of the seat. Thankfully he grabbed me down and held onto me the rest of the ride, but it is amazing that there weren’t these regulations until the mid-1980s.
Anyway, I just thought it was interesting that Razzle mentioned the Blue Streak. Keep up the great work guys and I look forward to hearing more episodes!

Hey Guys, I am a cake decorator and I look forward to a Thursday (I’m in Australia) because I know I can sit and listen to your new podcast while I work. It can be a lonely job sometimes, so your chatter keeps me company and since I am not concentrating too much on work I tend to be more creative!
Like most, I am sure, I originally came here because my husband and I are fans of Zac. My husband and I are your age and I enjoy the references to all of your favourites. Without prattling on about that, I gotta say, Zac, though things you have done over the years, I felt that you exude this feeling of positivity, kindness, humour and intelligence. Listening to this podcast, just confirms that for me.
I personally dont know why people are not enjoying Razzle. I find the dynamic between all of you so funny and refreshing. I literally feel like I am sitting in on a conversation with my mates…. I am not after a big production and what you present to us each week is light hearted and fun.
This weeks podcast with Bert Kreischer had me in hysterics! Such a funny episode! You guys are clearly having a wonderful time and it shows!
I agree that some guests are quieter than others, but I think that has more to do with their personality than you guys talking too much. I have enjoyed all of the podcasts thus far and I look forward to more in the future!
Keep up the fantastic work and thanks for putting a smile on my face!

Hey guys, what happened to the fan guides after episode 10?

  30. JonFebruary 17th, 2015 at 3:28 am

Yeah, I kinda feel sometimes there are too many regulars on the podcast, which prevents you from getting the best out of the guest.

Especially if the guest of the week is not super extrovert and naturally highly talkative… he/she then gets too easily ignored.

As for future guests, you gotta get Yvonne Strahovski on the show now that she’s back in LA, please. Also, having Clark Gregg, James Gunn and Katee Sackhoff would be great.

Good luck with Nerd HQ. I totally understand why you don’t want to do another fundraiser, but hopefully you can find other ways to get the $$$ needed. Nerd HQ is one of the best things about SDCC and it would be a shame to lose it. Please keep us updated about it.

I just binge listened to all the episodes so far and I had to get on here and say that Kentucky is just SO wrong. KFC is disgusting, and Kings Island is only the best theme park if you’re under four feet tall. Go to Cedar Point. You’re welcome 😉

Nerds talking about their favourite things can’t be beat, this podcast is awesome. Also, I really like the flow of the conversations, especially the way they go off topic and everyone talks over each other, it makes everything seem much more natural and real.

  33. renasMarch 11th, 2015 at 3:34 pm

just wish there was video to these podcasts.

  34. JordanMarch 18th, 2015 at 5:59 pm

Thank you for providing the finest entertainment whilst I work. Yvonne is the freakin greatest. You too, Zac.

  35. KirstyApril 14th, 2015 at 3:44 pm

Thanks for making this podcast, it’s so awesome. You guys totally need to have James Roday and Dulé Hill on this at some point.
