Return to Ravnica Preview Card: Volatile Rig

by Caleb Paullus (@theurbanraptor)

Return to Ravnica is looking like one of the most promising sets in Magic the Gathering history. Amazing new cards and reprints of some our favorites, October will be full of AWESOME. Enough stalling, lets jump into TheNerdMachine’s official Return to Ravnica preview card…

Volatile Rig!

Now some may look at this card and not think it has much potential, but this homebrew-master is very pleased. Lets dissect this Artifact Construct. A 4/4 for 4 is not terrible, though very vanilla feeling, however this rig can really mess up your opponent’s gameplan. It attacks each turn if able. Okay so that means they have to do something to get rid of it. They will have to try and exile it since they certainly don’t want to damage it…wait, why don’t they want to damage it? Oh yeah, once it receives a single point of damage, the fun begins.

If Volatile Rig is damaged, flip a coin, if you lose the toss, sacrifice it. Oh Noz! You lost your rig! Good. Excellent, in fact.

If Volatile Rig dies, flip a coin, if you lose the toss, Volatile Rig deals 4 damage to every creature and player. *cue evil laugh* MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA

No you could be sitting here reading this and say…what is this guy on? That is so horrible!

Well, I heard Volatile Rig is real good friends in a deck that also includes stuffy doll. If you are playing control with big creatures or have reanimation in your deck, this guy can be a very, very annoying threat to deal with.

Cheap cost
Effective threat
Can only be negated by exiling it
Plays nice with stuffy doll
Forces your opponent to do something about it
Begs to be flung

You aren’t going to win the coin toss every time, unless you are a magician
Graveyard hate is going to mean you need to make its time on the field count

All in all, a very fun card for homebrewers to play with. I’d be curious to find out if this makes it in any standard tournaments.
