Shows That Survived Against the Odds and Why

We all dread the phone call from our best friend with the news “Dude, it’s being cancelled.” I have had this conversation way too many times with way too many friends, but against all odds some shows were granted the respect and conclusions they deserved. Here are a few that grabbed the networks by their white collars and said “No! We will prevail!”

Supernatural:

Season Five was meant to be Supernatural‘s final season. Upon creating the show, Eric Kripke stated that he had five years planned for the show. What he had scheduled was the killer season where the world was in for one hell of a fight against the Apocalypse. Although this was arguably the best season of the series after the decrease in ratings after Season Three, what would the fans be missing if the series hadn’t continued on into its eighth season? Well, here they are (SPOILERS AHEAD):

1. Soulless Sam

2. Alpha monsters

3. Sam’s insanity

4. The Leviathan, Dick Roman and our favorite hacker Charlie

5. Meg crashing the Impala into Sucrocorp

6. Dean’s Purgatory

7. Castiel’s god-complex

8. Benny

9. Kevin and his crazy mother

10. Crowley and his deceitful ways

Prison Break:

Prison Break ran for four seasons and was lucky enough to run its course. Kevin Reilly said the show was cancelled because “the show played out.” They wanted to end strong and they got the chance to do so. Although a spin-off was planned called Prison Break: Cherry Hill, the writer’s strike prevented it from ever happening.

Fringe:

Fringe was given the chance to come to the end the fans, the cast and the crew were all happy with. Fringe was first near cancellation after being moved to the “death slot” on a Friday night. However, due to their extremely passionate fan base, they were saved and given another season. As season four came to an end, producers had not given the green light on a fifth season and the show’s creators had two Season Four finales lined up. First, a peaceful ending with every question answered. Second, an insane cliffhanger that would keep fans holding their breath until the next airdate. Season Five was then given the heads up and the season concluded on the show’s 100th episode titled “An Enemy of Fate.”

Chuck:

Cue the sighs of despair and longing. As an avid Chuck watcher and Subway eater, I think it’s safe to say that the entire fan base of Chuck vowed to save it from cancellation. But alas, the evil network people who cut series for whatever reason had to do what they had to do. Now the story of Chuck might depress fans, but I think it inspires them. Chuck was almost cancelled after Season Two but the “Save Chuck” Subway experience changed all of that and it carried on for two more seasons. Zachary Levi even led hundreds of fans to a Subway in Birmingham, England, gaining the show the title of “most discussed show online.” Who would’ve thought that eating delicious footlongs could help save your favorite show? The future for Chuck is still out there. How come? Because it is still very alive in the minds of fans. I’ve spoken to so many people that have seen the entire series over and over again. If the story, the characters and the hope is still present in the fans’ worlds, then what’s there to stop a Chuck reunion? Zachary Levi has even gone on record saying he hopes a Chuck movie will be made. Whatever may be, Chuck is one of those shows that will still be discussed years from now; whether it was the perfect last episode, the abundance of fans eating Subway or the way the show made people feel after a really good episode; Chuck will live on.

Love Supernatural and I miss Chuck so damn much! I just rewatched all 5 seasons, finished up last night and instantly became sad again that it’s over. The last few eps were some of the best in the series. I’d love a Chuck movie!

I think Jericho should be on this list as well. It was cancelled, then brought back to clean things up with a proper ending. Texas saved the day! Since I’m from Texas, I especially loved it. 🙂

I’m Italian Chuckster and how many have seen the series so many times and never get bored … I did well even in a time of my life … I am, however, a critic of the final and the last 4 episodes not up to Chuck. for this along with many others want to chuck a movie besides the fact that of course we miss her very much and we would have hoped for many more seasons. If thanks to the fans chuck was able to continue …. thanks to us can be made a movie, and we ask for this information in Zachary (in Italy we would like to organize a flashmob). Should it be made a kickstarter to chuck it will be possible to give money also from italy? I have always watched Fringe and Supernatural: The first definitely gave me a reassuring and appropriate ending with all the answers … a farewell to fans (this is not the case with chuck), the second one has been able to innovate and go beyond expectations and I expect a final worthy of the series (sinceramnte I think that Chuck had a good chance to renew itself and to the other seasons … I do not understand why he lost so much). For us it was not just chuck a fun series … but full of positive messages and hope, family and friends … and we need to chuck as standard ….. and look forward to reviewing Zachary and Yvonne together again in a comedy as it gave us many emotions.

Please bring Chuck back!!! it’s still the best show ever. There has been nothing like it. All you have to do is share it with a friend, I have made fans out of all of my friends. Forget a movie, bring the show back!!! We need the team back, the world is a much better place with Chuck in it! Subway will appreciate Chuck nights again.

I am an avid Chuck fan as well (John Casey is the best character ever created by man) and have watched the whole series 4 or 5 times over by now. I also made my husband fall in love with it, and can be blamed for my best friends very recent John Casey addiction as well. During a trip back home in February, we sat around with a class of wine and watched episode after episode on Amazon Instant Video. I am sad that I didn’t find the show until near the end of season 4, so I was unable to participate in the Subway/Chuck phenomenon, but after my sister showed me the season three finale, I promptly caught myself up and tuned in from then on. And I am proud to say I have a love for the show of someone who caught it from it’s very first episode! I still believe it is one of the greatest TV shows ever made, and though it was cancelled way before it should have been, it was an amazing 5 seasons! I would love to see something else be done with the show, because there is a Chuck sized hole in my heart! What an incredible fan movement to be a part of!

I was one of the desperate and obsessed Fringe fans that helped, even if in a small way, to keep the show alive and on air for the 5th season. I couldn’t have been more happy! I feel a kinship to my fellow Fringies because we overcame and “kept looking up!”

I’ve discovered Chuck 8 months ago. Since then, I’ve watched all episodes 4 times and I’m still very excited when I decide to turn on the Chuck’s Blu-ray edition again.
It was great and it still a talked show because of the natural relationship between the whole crew especially the three musketeers: Zachary, Yvonne and Casey. Also the fact that they were very close to their fans made them to be loved and respected even more.
I would definitely like to see a Chuck movie and I’ll be more than glad and honored to take part of the Kickstarter champagne if Warner Bros give a green light. Believe, without a single doubt, that Zach will succeed .

Great article! A few of my favorite season 6+ moments that you didn’t have space for:
    – The HUG!
    – Return to the wonderful brotherly vibe that had been under so much stress prior to the Apocalypse that wasn’t.
    – Escaping the Friday “death slot” to successfully launch the CW’s top new show this season!
    – Owing Death a Fruitbasket
    – Dean finally getting his own room.
    – Supernatural’s first TV Guide cover
    – The amazing growth of the relationship between SPN’s cast & crew with the fandom… truly becoming the Supernatural Family

And most important to me personally:
    – Taking over Hall H at Comic Con… twice!
    – Being able to meet the crew, and watch SPN being filmed up in Vancouver… two years in a row!

Oh, I forgot! One more thing we’d have missed: Supernatural season 9! (and beyond, I hope!)

Prison Break was my first TV obsession and I’m still not over that finale – I ball my eyes out every time I watch it! Getting that kind of an emotional response from fans, to me, is proof of a successful show – even if it hurts like a biatch every darn time!

Prison Break also introduced me to the world of shipping and fandom and I’ve never looked back 😀
