The League: The Tailgate Review

For the first time in awhile, The League writers gave the audience an episode in which the main cast was all together for the entirety of an episode as they tailgated before the start of a Chicago Bears game.

As I’ve written in the past, the show seems to have its most hilarious moments and best quotes when the gang is altogether for much of an episode. The Tailgate however, has become the one exception to this fact.

The idea of tailgating outside Soldier Field is a great one. It’s a great change for the usual scenery of the show, and fellow FX series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia had one of their best episodes when they chose to tailgate a Philadelphia Eagles game. That was actually the birth of the ever-popular “Green Man” costume if I’m not mistaken.

It seems like a slam dunk idea, but it was the execution that failed in this episode. The idea to tailgate comes from Andre, who has rented out an RV for his friends to come tailgate and then watch a Bears game up in the luxurious skyboxes in the stadium. Even the reluctant Ruxin eventually caves and the gang decides to take Andre up on his offer.

There was some solid poking fun at Andre moments like making fun of his idea to call the RV “Dre Town”, but the butt of most of the jokes this week was Kevin. Ruxin and Pete did this great running bit all episode where whenever Kevin was confused, they would do voiceovers in the fashion of a nature show. Essentially they documented Kevin’s actions pretending “the MacArthur” to be a wild animal. This was one of the only solidly funny bits in an episode filled with junior-high level jokes after former high school bullies of Andre, Frank “The Body” Gibiatti and his friends show up to tailgate next to the gang.

Frank, Tug and a guy known as “The Seed” show up and start to make things uncomfortable for Andre and friends, with Frank even hitting on Kevin’s wife Jenny. Throughout the episode, Jenny continues to demand to be treated like a lady, which is a huge deviation from her usual “one of the guys” character. In fact, Jenny spends much of the episode hanging out with her friends’ former bullies before Ruxin realizes they have peephole in the RV bathroom, which Jenny used earlier in the episode.

Overall the episode ends with a pretty physical two-hand touch football game in the Soldier Field parking lot between the two groups, with Kevin scoring the winning touchdown. At the end of the day, what could have been one of the series’ best episodes ended up being a letdown. The show uses its continuity loosely, but Jenny’s sudden character change was annoying to see and much of the jokes this episode was built around were juvenile. Overall if you’re a fan of this series but were unable to watch last night’s episode, maybe just be happy you did and just skip it.
