The Squab and the Quail

Through all of the various obstacles that Beckett and Castle have cleared in order to be together, we have never seen another man come between them. The relationship between ‘Caskett’ has always been sturdy and reliable but this episode functioned as the small pebble causing the endless ripples in the pool of ruin.

When Beckett breaks the news to Eric Vaughn (played by Ioan Gruffudd) that he was the intended target, he requests that Beckett serve as his personal bodyguard. Jealousy immediately hits Castle who decides he will take over as lead detective in order to impress Beckett. We usually see Beckett play the jealous half in the relationship but seeing Castle do everything to “win” Beckett over was part adorable and part gloomy.

The bodyguard detail caused a rift between Castle and Beckett in almost every way. Upon learning Beckett needed to stay in a hotel room with Vaughn, Castle states he doesn’t completely trust his girlfriend in the same living quarters as her protectorate. Beckett seems like she’s enjoying the jealousy coming from Castle but easily repels any advances from Vaughn.

Beckett does admit that to Vaughn that, although she loves Castle and they are in a serious relationship, she isn’t sure where the relationship is heading and finds it too complicated. Vaughn attempts to woo Beckett and lightly kisses her, until she rejects his next move and they are further broken up from a sniper. Castle discovers what happened during the investigation but quickly shelves his disgust when Beckett reassures him that the kiss meant nothing to her.

Seeing Castle go from jealous and concerned boyfriend to determined pseudo-detective was a lot of fun and well played by Nathan Fillion. Every line was delivered with a degree of clumsiness but meant to do so. One thing that didn’t sit well with me was his cooperation with Captain Gates, who didn’t seem to have a problem with a writer taking a leading role in a murder investigation.

With Beckett guarding Vaughn and Castle going on a caffeine induced fury, Detectives Ryan and Esposito were given a lot of time on screen together. This is never a bad idea as the two buddies are often perfect together with their jokes, timing and chemistry. It’s mentioned nearly every time, but I know everybody wishes these two would receive more time in the spot light so long as it doesn’t take away from the main focus of the show.

The actual investigation was fairly standard and not entirely exciting. Most of the episode was spent looking for the original proposed killer until it is discovered that person was working for somebody else. In the end, Vaughn’s assistant was revealed to have embezzled most of the company’s fortune and was the man responsible for setting up the assassination attempts.

We see a glimpse of what the future could look like between Castle and Beckett in the upcoming weeks. There are only three episodes remaining this season and I would expect something drastic to shake up the relationship, whether it’s a tragic breakup or a sincere engagement. The way this episode ended and with Beckett questioning what the future holds for them, I’d say the tragic breakup seems more likely at this time, although I’d like to be proven wrong.

The jealousy battle between Castle and Beckett was childish fun but I was really hoping something else would happen between Beckett and Vaughn just for dramatic flair. It was a good episode but a few inconsistencies and a lack of emotional wedge kept this from being a great episode.

I was think of the beginning of the episode where Castle was playing video games and Kate was trying to get him away but Castle Ignored him. The first thing that went through my mind was if she was my girlfriend I would have pressed start threw the control to the couch and went after her. I am kind of thinking that at the next episode they are probably going to be talking about the whole wanting to be married thing because Kate looks like that is where she wants it to head to but Castle seem just ok with the things the way it is which is something Kate doesn’t want forever.

Remember, too, that we actually have to wait TWO weeks to see the results of this. This episode was originally supposed to air NEXT week, but due to the Boston bombing, it was swapped forward. The episode that got pushed back to next week (“Still”) PRECEDES “The Squab and the Quail.”
