Have you fallen behind on your nerd news? Don’t worry, we’re here to help! Here are a few stories to bring up at the water cooler this week:
After crashing their platform during South by Southwest, ComiXology and Marvel are once again offering their 700 free issues promotion. Like before, the comics will be available over multiple digital devices, but there’s a catch this time around. Those who want to acquire the comics must sign up on ComiXology’s website by April 9 and starting April 11, the titles will be available for free for forty-eight hours.
A new Pokémon character has been revealed for the Pokémon X and Y games coming out in October. Though there hasn’t been confirmation it is an evolution of Mewtwo, they certainly share many characteristics. Even the official Pokémon website is being coy, stating, “It is suspected that the newly discovered Pokémon has some sort of connection with the legendary Mewtwo.” Otherwise, we’ve just gotten our first look at a brand new character!
Dark Horse Comics has just announced they will release a comic book adaptation of George Lucas’ original Star Wars script. Readers will get the chance to learn about the Star Wars that almost was, including new and different characters and different versions of characters we already know. It will be an eight issue miniseries and is due to be released in September.
Researchers have just discovered a new pair of microbes and have given them a name with a nerdy twist. These microbes that help termites digest wood have been named after the Cthulhu, a monster created by author H.P. Lovecraft, and the Cthylla, the Cthulhu’s offspring. The scientists say they came up with the names because the microbes reminded them of the way an octopus swims, much like the Cthulhu are described in Lovecraft’s stories.
The Marvel Phase One box set was released last week and includes sneak peeks for what’s to come in Phase Two. The long-awaited briefcase set contains concept art and on-set images from upcoming movies like Thor 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy plus a few frames from Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Though details are being kept under wraps for the most part, news keeps leaking out about what Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will look like. First of all, the soundtrack is like the eighties exploded in your ears, and now we’ve learned it will be set in 2007 as predicted thirty years ago. A new game listing on XBox.com also reveals actor Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens) will be involved somehow and that the game will be released May 1.
Project X Zone will be coming to North America in June. The game is a collaboration between many video game development companies and includes a huge cast of recognizable characters from games like Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Street Fighter, and more. The game comes out June 25 and is for the 3DS.
