Have you fallen behind on your nerd news? Don’t worry; we’re here to help! Here are a few stories to bring up at the water cooler this week:

It has been announced Star Wars: Episode VII will be released on December 18, 2015, making it the first Star Wars movie not to premiere in May. The change moves it up a few months from its original, tradition-following date of May 22. The movie is still in early stages and script rewriting is currently underway. It begins filming in London in the spring.

Already home to Arrow and potentially The Flash, The CW is looking to expand further into the comic book world with Hourman. This DC character (real name: Rex Tyler) is a pharmaceutical analyst who discovers a pill that gives him superhero powers, but only for an hour, and receives time vision through an hourglass around his neck. If picked up, it will not be the only new superhero show on TV next year – in addition to the aforementioned possibility of The Flash, NBC is adapting Constantine and Fox has already ordered Gotham, a Batman prequel focusing on a young Commissioner Gordon.

Marvel is developing four new series exclusively for Netflix. The series will focus on Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage and begin streaming in 2015 and then culminate in a miniseries called The Defenders. Check out more information about this deal in a previous, full-length article here on The Nerd Machine.

The Iron Man suit may soon become a reality. The U.S. Special Forces Command recently got the green light from the Pentagon to develop the Tactical Assault Light Operator suit, very similar to Tony Stark’s famous armor. Many technologies that already exist would be incorporated into the suit; for example, the military has been working for two years on an exoskeleton that would allow a soldier to lift 17 times the weight he normally could. The suit could be available as early as next year.

There will soon be a new Ms. Marvel in town. The new superheroine is a teenager from New Jersey, a shapeshifter, and a Muslim. Her name is Kamala Khan and she will take over the name from Carol Danvers (now Captain Marvel), of whom she is a big fan, after she discovers her powers. The first issue featuring the new Ms. Marvel will hit shelves in February.

Just a couple of more weeks until the 50th anniversary special, Doctor Who fans! The BBC has finally released a full-length trailer and it’s a doozy. (SPOILERS) It features plenty of familiar faces and foes, including both the 10th and 11th Doctors, Rose Tyler, and John Hurt’s mysterious Doctor. The special premieres around the world simultaneously on November 23.

Following the success of the book-and-film franchise, Lionsgate is looking to create a theme park based on The Hunger Games. The company’s CEO said they had been approached about opening it from a couple of different territories but gave no further details. The second movie in the series, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, comes to theatres November 22.
